Monica Supports Calls to ‘Make Polluters Pay’

Monica has lodged a Parliamentary motion ahead of Make Polluters Pay Action Day on 23 September urging countries to take their fair share of responsibility for the climate crisis.

The Make Polluters Pay campaign is a coalition of charities and organisations, that includes Christian Aid & Oxfam.

Monica Lennon MSP, who is currently a member of the Scottish Parliament’s Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee at the Scottish Parliament commented:

“I commend campaigners in Lanarkshire and all those involved the Make Polluters Pay campaign.

“From my tour of local schools before summer, I know that young people care about climate justice, as do people across our community.

“I was pleased to learn more about the Make Polluters Pay campaign from Christian Aid, and I know that many volunteers across Lanarkshire feel strongly about it too.

“That’s why I was pleased to submit the motion in the Scottish Parliament to raise awareness.

“It is high time that those responsible for harming our planet are held responsible for their reckless actions by financing the costs of deterring further damage to human health and the environment.

“A loss and damage fund, financed by perpetrators and set up to mitigate the devastating impact of pollution would allow us to build a more sustainable and greener future.

“This important campaign, supported by various charities and organisations is a step in the right direction and I am delighted to submit my support for MPP Day in the Scottish Parliament.

“Ahead of Make Polluters Pay action day I will be speaking to local groups about my proposals for a new law to end ecocide, which is a plan to prevent the most serious environmental crimes. People can find out more about this at ECOCIDELAW.SCOT - Home.
