Monica Calls For Action to Prevent GP’s in Lanarkshire Becoming “Endangered Species”

Monica has warned that GPs are at risking of becoming an ‘endangered species’ in Lanarkshire as more local practice closures are announced.

NHS Lanarkshire has confirmed that Kildrum and Coatbank medical practices are set to close.

This comes as the British Medical Association Scotland (BMA Scotland) published data showing that almost one in ten GP practices in Scotland have formally closed their lists to new patients. Over the last ten years Lanarkshire has seen a 14 per cent reduction in the number of GP practices, falling from 114 to 98.

Monica Lennon commented:

“A GP crisis has been brewing in Lanarkshire for years.

“Now, with lists being closed to new patients, practices pulling the shutters down, and doctors facing burnout, GPs are becoming an endangered species.

“The closure of Kildrum and Coatbank practices highlights how fragile primary care services are.

“GPs practices are at breaking point struggling to attract doctors to fill positions and the people of Lanarkshire are struggling as a result.
