Monica's Proposed
Ecocide (Prevention) (Scotland) Bill

Updated_ ECOCIDE Social Quote Graphic

Nature and the climate are being severely damaged by acts of ecocide, and we are all suffering as a result. It doesn’t need to be this way. It’s time to stop the harm.

Ever since hearing about the international campaign to stop ecocide back in 2021, I knew Scotland had to pave the way in the UK and implement this into Scots Law.

My members' bill would ensure that those who commit the most serious acts of environmental harm are held accountable for their actions.

What is Ecocide?

Ecocide is the mass damage and destruction of the natural living world. It literally means 'killing the environment'.

The theory is that no one should go unpunished for destroying the natural world. Campaigners believe the crime should come under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, which can currently prosecute just four crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression.

I launched my public consultation on a proposed members’ bill for an Ecocide Law for Scotland on 8 November 2023 and it closed on 9 February 2024.

Consultation responses are being reviewed.

In the meantime, you can take action now.

Use to email your MSPs, MP and councillors to indicate your support for an ecocide law in Scotland and ask them to back my proposed members’ bill.

I am confident that my bill would act as the deterrent that Scotland needs to fight against further climate chaos.

Our natural environment provides us with everything we need to live. There can be no economic and social justice without environmental justice.
