Government Must Review Scottish Fire Service Funding Cuts

In a parliamentary motion lodged today, Monica Lennon has asked her colleagues to acknowledge and support the important work carried out by Scotland’s Fire and Rescue service and urged the Scottish Government to review service cuts.

This comes after the Fire Brigades Union Scotland raised concerns that the stark funding cuts have totalled £36m in the last five years and are forcing the SFRS to make staff and services reductions.

Monica said:

“Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with senior representatives of the Fire and Rescue Service in Lanarkshire to learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing the service.

“This meeting strengthened my concerns that the significant budget cuts are putting firefighters and our communities at risk.

“I am urging my MSP colleagues to stand up and support our fire service and oppose the planned removal of 10 appliances and high reach vehicles.

“Funding arrangements for the Fire Service must be reviewed to ensure that firefighters in Lanarkshire and beyond can carry out their job safely and adequately."
